PROJECT SWABHIMAN: ACCESSING RIGHTS AND ENTITLEMENTS FOR THE TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY

Launched in 2024, Project Swabhiman is Akam Foundation’s flagship initiative to bridge the gap between policy and practice in Assam. Anchored in the vision of inclusion as equal citizens within the constitutional framework, the initiative aims to:

  • Ensure legal recognition
  • Promote social inclusion
  • Create systems of support rooted in dignity and equity

OUR INTERVENTION

1. LEGAL & DOCUMENTATION SUPPORT

  • Assisting trans* individuals with applications for Transgender ID Cards
  • Supporting name and gender marker changes on Aadhaar, PAN, and Voter ID
  • Providing navigation support through government systems

2. LEGAL LITERACY & AWARENESS

  • Developing easy-to-understand educational materials in local languages
  • Hosting weekly meet-ups and workshops on rights, entitlements, and legal processes
  • Disseminating information on schemes like SMILE, Garima Greh, and Ayushman Bharat

3. GOVERNMENT COLLABORATION & SENSITISATION

  • Engaging with district authorities, police, and service delivery institutions
  • Conducting sensitisation programs with frontline officials to improve system responsiveness

4. COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT & PROTECTION

  • Building community leaders to navigate systems of governance
  • Strengthening safety networks and access to grievance redressal mechanisms

Documentation Support

Supported 40+ trans persons to apply for or correct key identity documents.

Systemic Engagement

Initiated conversations with local officials in 8 districts of Upper Assam to address trans-specific barriers in access to services.

Awareness

Reached over 600+ community members through regular legal literacy meet-ups.
