Gender Justice: Advancing Rights, Equity & Inclusion

“There can be no social justice without gender justice.”

At Akam Foundation, gender justice means ensuring dignity, equality, and freedom from discrimination for everyone—across all gender identities and expressions. As a trans-led feminist organisation rooted in Northeast India, we work through the lived experiences of trans, non-binary, and queer communities, especially in rural and small-town Assam.

Guided by India’s constitutional values and global human rights frameworks, our initiatives combine advocacy, leadership building, and grassroots education to challenge patriarchy and promote inclusion. We envision a world where queer and trans people are visible, safe, and respected—and where gender justice truly includes all genders, not just binary ones.

Right to Read: Building Knowledge, Nurturing Freedom

“Reading is not a privilege — it is a right.”

Right to Read Image

At Akam Foundation, we believe the Right to Read is central to inclusion and social justice. As a trans-led feminist organisation in Northeast India, we view reading as a radical act of empowerment— one that opens doors to imagination, knowledge, and equality. For queer, trans*, and marginalised communities in rural Assam, access to books and learning spaces is more than education—it’s liberation.

Rooted in India’s constitutional and policy frameworks, including Article 21A, the RTE Act (2009), and the National Education Policy (2020), our Right to Read initiative builds community libraries, nurtures reading culture, and promotes multilingual, inclusive learning.

Through this work, Akam envisions a future where every person—regardless of gender, identity, or geography—can read freely, think critically, and access the knowledge that shapes their own liberation.
